For this reason, nearly fifty castles and some watchtowers were built along the route to stop the Muslim invasion to the north. The castle route of Gai\u00e0 is easily accessible by car and includes the castles of La Riera de Gai\u00e0, Tamarit, Torredembarra, Vespella, Altafulla, El Catllar, Clar\u00e0, Creixell, Ferran, La Nou de Gai\u00e0, La Pobla de Montorn\u00e8s and Renau.
